What is a domain name?

A domain name is a text name which is used as a convenient way of finding your way around the Internet. It is part of a system called Domain Name Service (DNS) which provides you with an easy to remember address.

Registering a domain name on the Internet is the equivalent of registering a company name at Companies House. Once registered, no-one else can use that name. As there are many companies with similar names, it is important to register a suitable domain name for your company as soon as possible. Registering a suitable domain name is advisable to ensure your clients can easily remember the address of information, products and services you provide on the Internet.

Using appropriate domain names makes it easy for people to find you on the Internet, gives your online business more credibility and since you own the name you are not tied down to a particular Internet Service Provider (ISP) - you can change providers as often as you like without changing your email or web address.

What is the difference between extensions and any rules that apply to them?

All domain names are accessible from anywhere in the world, there is no performance difference between top level domains (TLDs or extensions). The main difference is in that .com's are perceived as being international and .co.uk's are seen as being UK based. If your company has an international market a .com domain would be a good choice whereas, .co.uk is ideal for companies primarily focused upon the UK.

.biz and .info domains can be registered for between 1 and 5 years, .com, .net and .org domains can be registered for between 2 and 5 years, all other domains can only be registered for 2 years at a time. Domain names registered with me2uweb can be used with any of our web hosting plans.

Note: .co.uk, .me.uk and .org.uk domains are registered with Nominet, the UK Internet names organisation, and will be registered on your behalf on the understanding that you have read and accept their terms and conditions.

There are considerable advantages in registering your domain name in multiple extensions, protecting a brand name or making it easier for visitors to find you regardless of the domain extension they enter.

We are able to register domains with the following extensions:

  .biz
The newest international extension to be made available and reserved exclusively for use by commercial organisations. Like the .com extension it is forecasted to be one of the most popular extensions giving an 'international' status with no obvious indication as to where the company is based.

  .com
Intended for commercial organisations and by far one of the most popular extensions to date, a .com gives an 'international' status with no obvious indication as to where the company is based.

  .co.uk
The .co.uk domain is intended for the registration of names relating to commercial enterprises and is usually associated with a web site or business situated in the United Kingdom.

  .eu
The .eu domain type is the new Top Level Domain representing Europe.

Note: Registrants must be based in Europe.

  .info
Another of the newest domain extensions with obvious use for any web site delivering information.

  .me.uk
Intended for personal use. Domain Name registrations made under .me.uk are expected to be made for natural persons, such as Mr John Doe registering johndoe.me.uk. However, it is possible to register any group of words under the .me.uk extension, and it is not compulsory to register your legal name.

  .net
Has become a popular choice where the preferred name is unavailable in .com and for general Internet use. Like .com, .net commands a global appeal.

  .org
The preferred choice for non-profit making organisations wishing to portray a global presence.

  .org.uk
The choice for non-profit making organisations based in or focused towards the United Kingdom.

We are also able to register domain names with the following globally recognisable premium extensions, giving you an even better chance of getting the best names:

  .br.com Brazil   .cn.com China

  .de.com Germany   .eu.com Europe

.gb.com Great Britain   .gb.net Great Britain

  .hu.com Hungary   .no.com Norway

  .qc.com Quebec   .ru.com Russian Federation

  .sa.com Saudi Arabia   .se.com Sweden

  .se.net Sweden   .uk.com United Kingdom

.uk.net United Kingdom   .us.com United States

  .uy.com Uruguay   .za.com South Africa

How long does it take to register a domain name?

Your domain name will be registered immediately on receipt of your order.
